Big monsters encountered at level 90
Monster Level is a (frustratingly named) mechanic in the game that controls the maximum size and strength of monsters one can encounter in the Wilderness, and will linearly increase as one gets further away from the Graveyard. It also controls several other aspects of the overworld, which serve to make the environment more perilous and rewarding the further one strays from the graveyard. For these reasons, it serves as a useful proxy for both distance and difficulty in the Wilderness.
Monster level becomes a visible metric in the top-right of the screen when the player reaches a distance away from the graveyard equivalent to the Fog Giants and Evil Cabin. Certain difficult areas may not display any monster level, such as the Toilet Realm and Heck, since they are considered distinct from the Wilderness. However, the monsters inside these locations will be of high level, which will be displayed beneath their health bars once the player encounters them.
Gameplay[]
Regular monsters encountered in the wilderness will be of a level at or below the Monster Level that the player can see on their screen. Elite enemies will be of greater level, but they are currently the sole exceptions to this rule.
Certain enemies can only spawn randomly in the Wilderness once a certain monster level threshold has been reached. Automobiles, for example, only begin spawning at monster level 10 or above. Similarly, dragins cannot be encountered on the surface (besides the crate on the Saloon) once the player reaches a different (currently undocumented) Monster level.
Monsters of higher level will be physically larger, have more health, move faster, and deal more contact damage to the player. In turn, bigger monsters give you more juice from both killing them or/and sucking them. Higher-level monsters will also have a chance to drop high-level items (be them weapons or headwear) that can make fighting powerful enemies easier.
Large, high-level weapons can be found lying on the ground at higher monster levels without the hassle of fighting enemies, with their power similarly tied to the Monster level that they are found in.[Verify with most recent updates]
Terrain generation is modified by Monster level as well; the height of the hills encountered at low monster levels will be low, but it progressively increases as Monster level grows.
Objects like Crates and Trees are not currently affected. Koalaths are also not affected despite being monsters.[Verify with most recent updates] (Koalaths in Heck are the exception, and are always of high level.)
As mentioned prior, Heck and the Toilet Realm always contain high level monsters.
Trivia[]
- A rare bug causes the monsters to stop spawning at random high Monster Levels, save for Koalaths in trees or other monsters that may spawn inside of crates.
- At high monster level, very large monsters may not be spawned exactly at the surface. Instead, they will spawn mid-air and fall down from the heavens. This is most obvious with Stroll Fiends and other tall enemies.
